In the Penny Arcade: Stories (American Literature Series)

In the Penny Arcade: Stories (American Literature Series)

In the Penny Arcade: Stories (American Literature Series)

Winner of the 1997 Pulitzer Prize.

After the success of his first novels (Edwin Mullhouse and Portrait of a Romantic), Steven Millhauser went on to enchant critics and readers with two short story collections that captured the magic and beauty of his longer works in vivid miniature.

The seven stories of In the Penny Arcade blend the real and the fantastic in a seductive mix that illuminates the full range of the author's gifts, from the story of "August Eschenburg," the clockmaker's son whose extraordinary talent for creating animated figures is lost on a world whose taste for the perverse and crude supersedes that of the refined and beautiful, to "Cathay," a kingdom whose wonders include elaborate landscape paintings executed on the eyelids and nipples of court ladies.

In the Penny Arcade: Stories (American Literature Series)

Dalkey Archive Press brings back into print Millhauser's classic and acclaimed stories in their American Literature series. The imagery alone is stunning, but coupled with Millhauser's insights into human flights and foibles, these fictions hold both truth and a surreal, disturbing beauty.

Surely novelist Kirsten Bakis (Lives of the Monster Dogs) and Millhauser in his story "August Eschenburg" had the same dream the same night about their characters. Both are named August, both are creators, and both must confront the troubling issues between what is human and what is humanlike. August Eschenburg creates automatons with such art that they appear to be alive--for very brief performances. His art is copied and subverted by Hausenstein, who builds what the audiences seem to want: automatons whose sexual characteristics are grossly exaggerated in huge rolling hips, leering faces, and large breasts. Art falls prey to popular entertainment when August's benefactor dumps him for--you guessed it--the rosier robot. Like Kafka's "Hunger Artist," August as artist will be drawn back to his art by an urge stronger than mere economics, an urge that applies to artists such as independent press publishers as well!

Entitled The Splendid Magic of Penny Arcade, it details the history of a comic strip called Penny Arcade. The comic appears to catalog the lives of two young men who are utterly steeped in popular culture.

Each chapter gathers into a coherent beam of savory trivia, strange facts, formerly mysterious origins, biographical information, interviews, inaugural conventions, an unlikely charity, and comic strips. You get the sense that some of the content may be apocryphal—for example, the part where they eat a whole wolf basically comes out of nowhere. Also, if one of them really did become “King of the Britons,” you’re sure you would have heard about it somewhere else.

East Village Usa

East Village Usa

East Village Usa

East Village USA revisits the sprawling, renegade art scene that flourished in the East Village during the 1980s. Many prominent artists, including Jeff Koons, Kiki Smith, Peter Halley, and Philip Taaffe began their careers in the occasionally makeshift storefront galleries that prospered for several years as low-priced alternatives to Soho's rapid gentrification. Representing traditional media such as painting, sculpture, and photography, while emphasizing the film, music, and performance art of the period, this lavishly illustrated exhibition catalogue contains works by more than 75 artists, as well as documentary photographs of people, galleries, performance spaces, and clubs. It provides a striking contribution to the resurgence of interest in a brief but little documented and even less understood period of art history. Covering the stylistic gamut from graffiti and punk expressionism to Neo-Geo and appropriation through some 200 images, East Village USA examines the key exhibition sites and events that shaped the neighborhood and includes work by Jean-Michel Basquiat, Sarah Charlesworth, Keith Haring, Jenny Holzer, Lady Pink, Tom Otterness, Kenny Scharf, Fiona Templeton, Tseng Kwong Chi, David Wojnarowicz, and many others. The catalogue accompanies an exhibition at the New Museum of Contemporary Art.

The Arcades Project

The Arcades Project

The Arcades Project

"To great writers," Walter Benjamin once wrote, "finished works weigh lighter than those fragments on which they labor their entire lives." Conceived in Paris in 1927 and still in progress when Benjamin fled the Occupation in 1940, The Arcades Project (in German, Das Passagen-Werk) is a monumental ruin, meticulously constructed over the course of thirteen years--"the theater," as Benjamin called it, "of all my struggles and all my ideas."

Focusing on the arcades of nineteenth-century Paris-glass-roofed rows of shops that were early centers of consumerism--Benjamin presents a montage of quotations from, and reflections on, hundreds of published sources, arranging them in thirty-six categories with descriptive rubrics such as "Fashion," "Boredom," "Dream City," "Photography," "Catacombs," "Advertising," "Prostitution," "Baudelaire," and "Theory of Progress." His central preoccupation is what he calls the commodification of things--a process in which he locates the decisive shift to the modern age.

The Arcades Project is Benjamin's effort to represent and to critique the bourgeois experience of nineteenth-century history, and, in so doing, to liberate the suppressed "true history" that underlay the ideological mask. In the bustling, cluttered arcades, street and interior merge and historical time is broken up into kaleidoscopic distractions and displays of ephemera. Here, at a distance from what is normally meant by "progress," Benjamin finds the lost time(s) embedded in the spaces of things.

More Choices! More Variety! Selected Just for You......

The Arcades Project

You could spend years trying to read Walter Benjamin's The Arcades Project--after all, he spent much of the last 13 years of his life doing the research. When he committed suicide in 1940, he destroyed his copy of the manuscript, and so for decades the work was believed lost. But another copy turned up, and Howard Eiland and Kevin McLaughlin have translated it into English. It is a complex, fragmentary work--more a series of notes for a book than a book itself--which probes the culture of the Paris arcades (a cross between covered streets and shopping malls) of the mid-19th century and the flaneur ("the man who walks long and aimlessly through the streets" in an "anamnestic intoxication [that] ... feeds on the sensory data taking shape before his eyes but often possesses itself of abstract knowledge--indeed, of dead facts--as something experienced and lived through"). The Arcades Project is, frankly, so dense a work that one hardly has enough time to glimpse fleetingly at its sections--over 100 pages of notes on Baudelaire alone!--before mentioning it to you, though one certainly looks forward to the opportunity to peruse it at leisure.

Pac-Man Collection Overview

Pac Man Collection GBA

Pac-Man Collection Specifications

If you're still suffering the lingering effects of Pac-Man fever, you'll be excited to hear that Namco's Pac-Man Collection repackages the infectious original with three other Pac-Man-themed games in a new anthology for the Game Boy Advance.

Pac-Man Collection contains the original Pac-Man, plus Pac-Attack, PacMania 3D, and the never-before-seen-out-of-the-arcade Pac-Man Arrangement game. Pac-Man plays like you remember, and like Namco Museums's picture perfect re-creation of Ms. Pac-Man, it features spot-on control, graphics, cartoon cutscenes, sound effects, and, best of all, music from the coin-op (who can forget that opening theme?). As such, it's easily the best of this collection.

PacMania 3D is basically a 3-D version of the original, and is just about as uninspired now as when it came out. Pac-Attack is a cool variation on such puzzlers as Tetris and Columns, and as such it's perfect for handheld gaming. Pac-Man Arrangement is an odd little game that plays much like the original but adds weird power-ups that, for example, make you gigantic.

Because Pac-Man Collection is a perfectly emulated package, there isn't much to gripe about, save that Ms. Pac-Man is a far, far better game than the original, and you'll have to shell out more money if you want that one. But for retro gamers on the go who also want to track down ghosts and eat power pills, this package is sure to sate your hunger. --Andrew S. Bub

Pros:

  • Perfect graphics and sound
  • Perfect controls
  • Pac-Attack is a fun Tetris variant
Cons:
  • It's missing the best Pac game, Ms. Pac-Man
  • Pac-Man Arrangement and PacMania 3D aren't really great games
